There have been quite a few "How Too's" for digging into a pomegranate lately- they seem to have recently taken blogging world by storm! I sent Chris a "Pom a Gram" a while back and it arrived recently!
The first step is to cut off the pretty little crown,
You then score the rest of the pomegranate, four to six sections of the pomegranate divided by white membrane will be visible. With the knife’s point, score the skin along each section.
You then carefully pull the pomegranate apart, breaking it into smaller sections. Over a bowl of water, loosen the arils and allow them to drop freely into the bowl. The arils will sink to the bottom of the bowl and the membrane will float to the top.
You then use a spoon to scoop out the pieces of white membrane that have floated to the top of the water. Pour the arils and remaining liquid through a strainer.
Tah- Dah!
How do you store pomegranate arils?
Unopened pomegranates can last up to one month on the counter or two months in the refrigerator. Fresh arils can last two weeks in a sealed plastic container in the refrigerator and frozen arils can last for many months in the freezer. To freeze pomegranate arils, spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Place in a freezer for two hours or until frozen. Transfer frozen arils to a resealable plastic bag or container. Frozen arils can be enjoyed well after the season has ended.

Oh my what a timely post I saw pomegranates at the stor the other day and I almost bought one but then I was not sure how long they last... now I know!!! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteAnother good tip is to scoop the arils out underwater! Fill a big bowl (or the sink) with water and scoop away. This way you avoid getting red splotches everywhere ;)
ReplyDeleteI had my first pomegranate recently, it was a messy operation getting that thing open! Worth it in the end, though.
